Siberians vs. allergies

Are you allergic to cats??  Never been able to own a pet??  Well, there may be hope!!

Although there are no scientific or medical studies that show why or how the Siberian Cat can be owned by allergy sufferers...the proof is in the many allergy sufferers that now own them - or that are owned by a Siberian!

First lets look at the allergies themselves - there are two types of allergic reactions that people have towards pets.

The first type is the production of an antibody (immunoglobulins).  Symptoms of this type include runny, itchy eyes, sneezing, wheezing, sore throats and asthma.  People with this type of allergic reaction do very well with the Siberian breed.

The second type (Type 4) is when the defense cells react with the allergens which can cause swelling and sometimes hives, eczema & atopic dermatitis.  These are the skin reactions when coming into contact with cats and dogs.  People with this type of allergy may still have some reactions, but not as severe - some may not have any reaction.

Reactions to cats is caused by allergens in the saliva and sweat glands, called FEL D-1.  When the saliva dries, it flakes off becoming an airborne microscopic allergen, or dander.

So how is it that the Siberian Cat is hypo-allergic??

Many people believe that the Siberian Cat is void or produces very low levels of the FEL D-1 protein, therefore they produce no or very little dander to become airborne.  Some believe that it is the oil in the skin, that once protected them from the harsh Russia elements, that prevents the dander from becoming airborne.

No one knows for certain, and until some tests are done...we may never know.  But in the meantime, kittens are being placed in the homes of allergy sufferers at about an 80% success rate, much to the delight of many people that have never been able to own a cat before.  Remember that each cat is different, as is each person - visiting a Siberian cat in person is the best way to ensure that you will be able to own one.  With the high success rate...it is definitely worth a shot!

Even though many people want a Siberian because of allergies, they get so much more!!  A loyal, devoted, loving friend that will watch TV with you, help you in your every day tasks and lend a supporting paw when you have had a rough day.  They are very calm, quiet, unflappable cats with a laid back personality and they are always up for a game of catch the feather!!
