Kitten Proofing

Before bringing your kitten home, look at your home from a kittens point of view.  Keep in mind that kittens are very curious critters and will check out everything when they start feeling comfortable in their new home.

Here are some things to look for and watch for when your kitten arrives home:

Is his litter box and food easily accessed?  If you have dogs, a baby gate works great for letting the kitten in a room and not the dogs.

Make sure all toxic materials, cleaners are put away.  Childproof latches on cabinets are a good idea.

Keep houseplants up and out of kitty's reach - know what plants you have and whether they are poisonous or not.

Be careful of sewing supplies, needles, pins, string & yarn - keep them put away.

Check places that your vacuum doesn't get to easily but a kitten would have no problem getting into for pieces of string etc…

Although twist ties seem to be a favorite amongst cats, they are small and if swallowed the metal can perforate the intestines.  Best to keep them up.

Kittens also love the sound of crinkly bags, plastic grocery bags are a favorite, however, kittens can get tangled in the handles and can strangle if they panic and struggle to get free or they can suffocate.

If you have vertical blinds, determine how much of the string you need and cut the rest off.  The dangling cords can easily strangle a kitten if they get tangled.

Keep foods out of reach of kittens, even if the food is okay for them, the wrapper may not be.

Move dangling cords from TV, phone, irons up out of reach.

If you have children, keep small toys that kitten could swallow out of reach.

Make sure all heating vents etc… have a cover.

Remove breakable nick knacks until your kitten becomes a little more graceful!!  Or you can use anchoring clay.

Keep toilet lids down - especially with Bengal kittens, as most have a natural love of water.

TIP:  Find anything that looks like it could be a swell toy in the eyes of your kitten, if it is harmful, get rid of it or make it safe.

Bitter Apple or citrus scented sprays are ways of marking areas that are off limits to your kitten.

Most of all, enjoy your kitten, they are loads of fun and very entertaining, just use common sense as your guide to whether things are safe or not.
