Time to Pick Up Your New Kitten

What an exciting day!!!  After careful planning, your new fur ball is finally coming home!  We know that you are dying to call everyone you know to come over and meet the new addition, but wait...think of it from your kittens point of view...new home...new people...away from his siblings, maybe other pet smells and a very long, scary car ride.  This is all very stressful for a young kitten, but with all your proper planning, your new addition will soon be right at home and then ready to meet the neighborhood.  Let your kitten get to know you first and his surroundings before you introduce a bunch of other people.  Your goal is to make your kittens home debut as calm and relaxing as possible.

First things first though...as soon as you walk in the door, place your kitten's carrier right by the litter box.  Let her come out on her own, she will...curiosity will get the best of her.  Forcing her out will only give her a bad opinion of you and you want every moment you spend with her to be positive...so be patient and let her do it on her own.  You can coax a little, with a soft voice and maybe dangling an irresistible toy in front of the carrier door.  The main focus here should be letting her know where the litter box is.  If you have children waiting to meet her, give her a little time before so she can use the litter box if she needs to.  See

Don't be concerned it she doesn't eat the first day, she will come around after she feels a bit more comfortable.  But make sure she has plenty of food and fresh water available to her if she chooses to eat.

It is a good idea in most cases to keep her confined for a few days.  This will reinforce the litter box usage that her mom has taught her.  If she has used the litter box regularly, then let her start exploring, always let her do this on her own from her litter box.  This way she will always know how to get back to it.  If you pick her up and carry her down the hall, then down the stairs, she won't know how to get back to her litter box.  If you have a large house, you may want to close off some doors so her world is a bit smaller and so she doesn't get confused.  If you have a multi level home, a litter box on each floor is a good idea.

After a few days she will be zipping through your home like she owns the place, but give her the patience, encouragement and space to explore her new home on her own.
