Your kitten has already been shown by its mom how to use the litter box regularly and properly. We have reinforced the use of the litter box after the kitten is weaned from mom, although we really don't do much other than put the kitten in its litter box when they are weaned and when they venture downstairs we show them where the box is downstairs.
When you take your kitten home, its simple...put the kitten in the litter box and let him explore the house from there so he will always know how to get back to the litter box. If your house is large and there are lots of rooms...it is a good idea to close some of the doors to make his world a little smaller for the first couple of days. If kitten wakes from a nap, it is a good idea to take him to his litter box for the first couple of days. He may not have to use it...but it will reinforce where the box is. If you will not be around to supervise him or her...put her in the room with the litter box and her food & water and close the door. This gives the kitten a chance to become accustomed to the sounds and new smells of their new home without being far from their litter box and food and water.
Be sure to use the same type of litter that he is used to using. An abrupt change can cause him distress and if he does not like the new litter, to altogether stop using it or he may just not know what the new stuff is suppose to be for. So be sure to stick with the same type, plain clay is best for kittens - it you would like to switch later, do so slowly (over a week or so), by adding some of the new to the old…if he has no problems with the new stuff, go ahead and switch.
Never use clumping litter for kittens...they are curious and sometimes try to eat the litter, but also if it sticks to their paws and they lick it off it can clump in their intestines and cause blockage. After they are about 6 months old, it should be okay for them to use scoopable litter. Never use scoopable for pregnant females, especially close to their delivery time.
Always make sure that your kitten has access to his litter box.
Any type of litter box is fine, but keep in mind that the kitten will grow and a small litter box will have to be replaced as he grows - but you can start with a large one...even if you think the kitten may get lost in it...don't worry, he won't! We try to have every type of litter box here, covered, open, large, small...so the kittens get used to any type.
